Build...

#80 - Sep.2023

...Measure and Learn.

These are the building blocks of lean methodologies. Through constant iteration, teams refine their value proposition, experiment, and pivot their ideas.

Unfortunately, many teams over-index on the 'build' phase. Building & delivering software faster is the priority. Efficiency is the key driver. Learning becomes optional.

Measuring and learning from customers is hard.

But this is as important as delivering faster features. Is by calibrating your initial hypothesis that you ensure your product or service is on the right path.

Customers don't care about your efficiency in delivering a feature. I would argue that, in most customers, timing is a very subjective perception. But what they do care about is how your solution helps them accomplish their goals. They look forward to memorable experiences.

Measuring & learning is not just about purely data-driven decisions. Data is important, for sure; but the qualitative insights you get by talking to people and observing them using your product are equally important. You leverage data by asking the right questions. Make your curiosity lead the way.

A practical tip for ensuring you don't forget about measuring & learning: set your learning goals early in the development process and ensure you invest time in calibrating your goals at every iteration.
