Generative AI: what is left for creators?

Generative AI will shape our world.
It’s impressive the evolution so far. What seemed buggy and hilarious one year ago is now jaw-dropping and, let’s be honest, scary.
Personal assistants, copilots, prompt-based video animations, and images are just a few examples of a constantly evolving technology that came here to stay.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about this trend and struggling to find clear answers through the ocean of uncertainty ahead of us:
What do these mean for the creative industry? Is it really at risk?
What is left for creators when these tools hit the mainstream?
See, I think creativity is the secret sauce of what makes us humans. Throughout our history, we have evolved as a species through a constant creative act - language, abstract concepts, currencies, art, music,…
Creativity is, in its pure form, a way of expressing what we have to say. Is our contribution to society.
There is no doubt that GenAI tools will empower people to become creators. The big difference now is that the craft of, say, editing a video is now abstracted through technology if you use the right instructions (prompts).
Now, how does this affect our capacity to assess quality in a future overloaded of AI-based content? We can expect a lot of noise in the future creative industry. Not to mention the amount of misinformation, fake news and privacy.
In this context, I believe curation and evolving a good taste through a conscious consumption of digital content will help us navigate through the noise.
Another challenge is differentiation. A by-product of lowering the entry bar for creators will generate a wave of commoditization of AI-based content. Will there be a space for human creativity in an AI-assisted world?
I’m a strong believer in the uniqueness of human creativity. From the beauty created through small imperfections in art, to the serendipity of connecting points across unimaginable domains to generate something new (culture, technology, science, arts).
We don’t really know what will be the real impact of this technology trend. But being aware of what makes us human will be our best leverage for the future.
