[Weekly Retro] Discovery habits

#4 - Jun.2023

Happy Friday! (and happy summer-winter depending on which hemisphere you live in)

Here is a quick idea before you head off for the weekend:

Bringing customer feedback closer to your product team is about habits and discipline. Habits in the form of repetition (sometimes failure) and learning; discipline in the form of a strong commitment to making the time for listening - and watching - how users are using your solution.

Good habits are always driven by good mechanisms to avoid falling into good intentions. These mechanisms should focus not only on how & when but also help develop the instinct to filter what customers say versus what they need. Use your curiosity to probe.

Customer discovery shouldn't be a one-time activity. It should become a team's habit. Think about what is your in-flow of customer feedback: daily? weekly? yearly? Are your mechanisms simple enough to promote consistency?
