[Weekly Retro] Metrics are not the goal
#209 - Feb.2025
Hi there!
💡 Here is a quick idea before you head off to the weekend:
There is a tendency to over-index on metrics.
As if metrics are the end-goal that we look for as an outcome of our products. Goodhart's law is a good reminder: "when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure."
Metrics are proxies – they indicate a trend but don't tell the whole story. In isolation, they are just datapoints. Within a context, they become enablers for decision-making.
A product isn't better simply because it has good metrics. What truly matters is how you interpret these signals and the strategic decisions you make based on them.
